Zakynthos Greece – A photographers paradise!

The greek island Zakynthos is situated in the Ionian sea. Zakynthos, or Zante, is quite mountainous and has multiple fertile valleys, and is world famous for its crystal clear waters with more than 30 beaches to explore. The colors is almost oversaturated and the scenery is green and inviting. What more can a landscape photographer ask for?

Here are my tips to were you can go to get some great photos on the island and have an amazing holiday at the same time.

Navagio, or Shipwreck beach is the most famous beach of Zakynthos, with golden sand, a smugglers shipwreck, steep cliffs and intense blue waters. You can only access the beach by boat, and in the same area you can find the Blue caves of Volimes, were the sea has made deep inroads in the soft limestone cliffs. This is also a popular place for diving, the scenery is also stunning underwater. Luckily there are many day trips offered from different locations on the island to visit the Blue caves and Shipwreck beach.

Some other wonderful beaches to check out is Vassilikos, Gerakas, Spiantza, situated along the southern side of the island. Due to their soft sand and clean water, these beaches are used as breeding spots for the loggerhead sea turtle known as the Caretta-Caretta. You can access and use the beaches but beware so you do not disturb the turtle eggs.

Gerakas beach is a part of the national protected marine park at Zakybthos. The ladderback turtles called Carretta Caretta comes ashore from the middle of june to lay their eggs.

If you are looking for great nightlife and a beach full of activities , Laganas is the place to be. There is plenty of beach bars and tavernas and many of the day trips has their starting point here. If you want you can rent a small boat and go exploring the many secluded beaches in the area by yourself. I did just that and would highly recommend it.

You can also take a short walk from Laganas beach to visit Cameo Island. It is a tiny island that is connected to the island by a small pedestrian bridge. On top of the island you find a taverna and on the other side you will find a secluded small beach with a small beach bar. This place is also very popular for late night beach parties.

Porto Zorro is an ideal spot for events and weddings. It also has a stunning beach with rock formations. And the food… it’s really good stuff.

Now thats a burger with a view! The taverna at porto Zorro have great food.

If you are looking for a natural spa experience you can go by car to visit Xigia Beach. This beach has waters with a high sulphur content and this makes the skin really soft. Perfect for a hot day as the water is a bit cooler on this beach- just a few metres from the beach the water can be more than 30 meters deep.

With a high content of sulphur Xigia beach is a perfect natural spa.

All in all I would highly recommend Zakynthos. Great scenery, very friendly locals and great food and wine everywhere.
