It has been so cold this week in the Netherlands that the canals in Amsterdam and even the Zaanse Schans has frozen.

When the temperatures drop below zero, the Dutch start dreaming of another frozen winter and the chance of ice skating on the canals. Weather forecasts are watched eagerly and skates sharpened and polished just in case. And this week it finally happened! The canals was frozen enough to be skated on, and therefore the Dutch was flocking to the icy canals to spend some time with family and friends or just showing of their ice skating skills.
The weather totally turned and today it was 12 degrees celsius, so for those who missed the opportunity to spend some time on the frozen canals will probably have to wait until next year. I was lucky to get some photos of this special event that took place and want to share some of my best photos with you.
The best tip I can recommend for conditions with a highly reflective surface combined with direct sunlight, is to use a polarizer filter. With this filter you can easily reduce light reflections on for example metal, wet leafs or frozen water, like I did when I captured this image in Amsterdam.

Interesting view into another aspect of Amsterdam life. Amazing how those who do not get snow or ice frequently seem to look forward to its arrival, while we, here in Canada, can’t wait for it to leave. We are still a month away from getting to +12, but we await the spring with hope.

I like the composition and the colors in the windmills, how the cloudy sky and water seem to contain the image.
